- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2013Twenty years after the zombie apocalypse, there are outposts where the living barely hang on amid the untold numbers of the risen dead. One of these in the mountains of Colorado is called The Settlement, the brainchild of a group of church-going Folks who anticipated and prepared for the catastrophe.
In addition to the Folks, though, there are five boys just into their teens in the outpost, with Bobby being the oldest. These five were mysteriously brought into The Settlement as infants by the camp's two founders after a foraging run, and years later many of the residents distrust and fear them as outsiders.
Turns out there just may be a reason for the Folks to feel that way. No spoilers, but this is a bare-bones overview of The Creepers by Norman Dixon Jr. (@normandixonjr), an original and highly enjoyable action/horror story filled with interesting and well-drawn characters. I was engrossed in the story from page 1, and read most of the second half in several long sessions because I wanted, needed, to know what happened next.
I must admit I hesitated a bit before choosing The Creepers for my next read; just a week after watching the season 3 finale of The Walking Dead television show, was I ready for more zombies? As a matter of fact, I was -- because Mr. Dixon's take on the genre is both fresh and engaging, and frighteningly realistic. The initial, mind-blowing panic of the dead rising and feasting on the living is long gone -- although, of course, not forgotten. Death by Creeper bite still happens, but life for the living has settled into a rhythm, of sorts.
But what would the world be like two decades after the dead take over most of the planet? What would it take to not only survive, but thrive in such a deadly environment? Because the risen dead -- which are everywhere and turn up in the oddest places, like flesh-eating booby-traps -- are not the only threats. There is also nature, in terms of both weather and wild animals, and other humans no longer fettered by the mores of civilization. Bobby and his brothers are fortunate in that the Folks at The Settlement made education a priority; what of the kids born after the collapse whose only lessons are life-and-death survival?
Something I found very interesting was that religion is addressed as a part of this story. Considering The Walking Dead TV show (I have not read the graphic novels) is set in the American Deep South -- which has a strong tradition of religion as I personally witnessed while living there during Navy assignments -- there have been surprisingly few references to religion.
Of course, in the context of a zombie apocalypse, beliefs will be tested and it wouldn't be surprising for the genuinely faithful to lose sight of what they'd learned. Others on the lesser or greater extremes of religiousness will also be affected, either sinking deeper or abandoning entirely their beliefs. Make no mistake, this isn't a story of the "left behind" ilk, but I found it refreshing and realistic that religion was touched upon.
In addition to exciting action scenes and more than a few frights, there are some memorable characters in The Creepers and along the way I developed some strong emotions about a few of them. Mr. Dixon has tweeted he is working on the next book in the series and I am looking forward to spending more time with these people as they fight for survival, and perhaps something more than just that.
I highly recommend The Creepers to anyone looking for a well-written and exciting action/adventure story that also happens to be a fresh take on the zombie genre. For more information on Mr. Dixon and his writing, visit his blog: The Settlement: News From The End of The World. [...]
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2013I am not a zombie fan but the reviews said this story was more than that. It certainly was! It is the story of a boy coming of age in a brutal dystopic world. I enjoyed the story and the characters. Very entertaining read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2013When I downloaded this book several nights ago I wasn't expecting to pull an all nighter but that's exactly what I did! This book had me from the start and has earned a spot in my top ten. I wasn't too sure on reading about the "creepers" from a 13 yr old boy's point of view but Bobby is definitely not your average boy. You will find no unnecessary fillers in these pages. It's packed with action, terror and gore. The zombies in this book are absolutely terrifying but this is a book about more than just zombies. Its about an unwanted boy trying to find his way in an apocalypse zombie riddled world. It has heart and I found myself rooting for Bobby all the way through. This author has great talent and I can't wait to read more!!!
You MUST read this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2013I really enjoyed this story. I liked the idea, a different twist on the zombie apocalypse, and the charachters. It was not predictable and kept me interested. I would have given it 5 stars except for the poor editing. It looks like someone used spell check without paying attention to what the spell checker was changing the words to, even with names. It actually got worse as the book went along and by the end I was really irritated. I hope the author will go back, edit it and re-release it. I still reccommend reading it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2012In my "completely broke" phase I downloaded dozens of books that were free for promotion. Most were crap; some where mediocre at best. And then I read "The Creepers" with the same low hopes I normally have for free e-books. This book blew my mind!!! There are some parts that are so intense, I can not remember a time when I have been so captivated by plot. I have been a fan of the zombie genre since it was so obsolete you had to order hard copies online to even find a zombie story. Then the genre blew up! I have mainly be dissapointed in the stories of survival, the same old cliches, and the unmemorable plot lines, but not this time. A few times I found myself asking "Did that just happen?!" It was a story I couldn't stop thinking about even when I was not reading it. I don't normally write reviews, but I felt compelled in this instance to let other people know if you are on the fence about buying this book- DO IT! It's enthralling! Much better than my attrocious spelling...
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2013I was a little hesitant when I started this book that it would be another of many zombie books out there. Much to my delight, I found it very well written and very entertaining. Not only is this book well written, but the characters are all well developed and you definitely get some sense of not only who they are, but also how they got that way. On top of this, the action kept me intrigued throughout the book and I had a hard time putting the book down.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to Mr. Dixon's future additions to this story. Furthermore tee, I will not hesitate to recommend this book to others, especially those that enjoy good solid writing and zombies.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2013This story had a bit of a different twist to it, where zombie bites are maybe not all that deadly. The world is gray, the times are hard, the people taking care of "the boys" are just mean cusses and I enjoyed the revenge. That said, I'd consider this more of a Young Adult story, vs. for older readers like myself. Not to say that reduces the story in any way...my cousin would read this in a second, and probably enjoy it more than I did. The writing style was not tight or punchy, but it got the message across.

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it
I have read a lot of zombie stories both novels and short stories and i have to say this rates as one of the best. we follow a boy in a post apocalyptic world when he escapes a settlement when its discovered he is immune to the virus. being a christian settlement they see him and his brothers as the work of the devil. the story follows Bobby as he plots and executes his revenge for the death of his brothers. I read this book in two sittings, the story flowed really well and the characters were believable and engaging. Norman uses colourful language in his descriptions which really brings the story to life. it was a refreshing change to have characters that were good people willing to help rather than the usual sinister characters you get in so many books. this story had a good balance of both. Looking forward to the next installment to see what happens to Bobby next

1.0 out of 5 stars Was soll das?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf you like zombie stories you will love this. The Creepers: Born in Winter is one of the best zombie books I've read. It ends on a hopeful note after describing the worst & best of human behaviour. Hope to read more by Norman Dixon soon
