- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2015I love reading zombie books written by women, and Shana Festa’s Time of Death: Induction was no exception. Festa offers a unique take on the zombie apocalypse. The main character, Emma Rossi, is perfectly flawed in a way that makes her endearing to readers. You can’t help but root for the clumsy protagonist and her yappy dog, Daphne. I must say that I can’t stand zombie stories that kill dogs (I’m pointing my finger at I am Legend – shame, shame). I’ll try not to include any spoilers in my review, so I won’t give away what happens to the dog, but I will admit there are several nail-biting (paw-biting?) moments in the book.
Emma and her husband, Jake, are at home when a zombie infection spreads through their city. The couple is soon forced to leave their house and venture into the dangerous streets to find another safe haven. Oh, did I mention there’s also a hurricane pummeling their town? The couple and their dog run into quite a few snafus but are fortunate enough to come across a group of soldiers. They work constantly to keep the group of civilians safe, but they are no match for the undead.
The writing is solid and the plot moves along quickly. Emma is a strong character with a snarky attitude but is determined to find the silver lining in the darkest of times. A lot of the book is Emma’s inner monologue about what’s happening around her. In my opinion, the most important aspect of a zombie book is having a likeable main character. If readers don’t love the protagonist then the story is going to be difficult to get through. Shana Festa has done a brilliant job of creating a character who’s loveable, and you can’t help rooting for her.
Zombie books rarely have happy endings, but there was a bit of hope at the conclusion of Time of Death, leaving room for the sequel. The second book in the series, Time of Death: Asylum, was published in December of 2014. I’m looking forward to cracking open the next book. If you’re a fan of action-packed yet character-driven zombie tales, then I highly recommend you read the Time of Death books.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2014For those of you have can’t wait until the next season of The Walking Dead, Shana Festa’s novel is the perfect thing to tide you over. Filled with tension, drama, gore, humor, hungry undead, and more gore, it’s a fun read.
Let’s face it: zombie stories can be a dime a dozen. The ambulance sirens, the collapse of civilization, the rotting neighbors who just won’t go away unless you shoot them in the head. What really matters in this horror subgenre is how the characters react to the situation, more so than how the zombies came to be. Shana’s story has that covered, while giving zombie fans all the viscera, apprehension, and false sense of security we all expect and demand. Though several familiar situations occur in her novel—find the military to see what’s happening, hide out on a boat, encounter a group of organized survivors, deal with children and pregnant women while trying to survive—Shana handles all of these with a realism not often displayed in zombie fiction. Her own medical background shines through in her descriptions of wounds, anatomy, and first aid. It’s hard to think of a better set of skills a zombie writer should possess, and Shana uses them to her full extent. One gets the sense that she has internalized the best zombie stories and films, and this shows in Time of Death. She takes it seriously, while giving you a face full of entrails.
Now for the story itself: Emma, a nursing student nearing graduation, lives happily with her husband, dog, and nice neighbors in Florida. She enjoys her medical work, and has nurse friends who make the hospital life tolerable. As any horror fan knows, this is all setup for the coming cataclysm. Yet, Emma and the other characters feel so natural, grounded in our reality, that they aren’t just zombie fodder. They react to situations in believable ways, sometimes doing questionable things, but always making the reader ask themselves if they would do the same, when faced with zombie hordes.
While a tropical storm rages over Florida, zombies overrun Emma’s town, and she barely escapes with her husband and their dog. The storm added an extra danger element to the novel, something I haven’t seen before in zombie stories. Soon, Emma and her family encounter other survivors, and manage to find some respite. But there is no escape, and just when the characters think is everything is fine…it sure as hell isn’t. There are many ups and downs in Time of Death, and not all of them are predictable. That’s no easy task in a trope that has received mass coverage. This book was entertaining from beginning to end, and once the zombies start shuffling on Emma’s lawn, anxiety never leaves the reader until the final page. I look forward to Shana’s next novel in this series, and I know you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time of Death Book 1: Induction
I tried desperately to find a flaw in this book. Really, I did. Not so I could be nit-picky in my review, but so I could turn around and give a reason, any reason, for me to not say "I wish I'd written it".
This is the book many post-apoc authors wish they'd written.
Keep in mind, folks, this is a debut novel.
Author Shana Festa is well known in the horror circuit for her excellent work on the Bookie Monster, as well as blogging and being a good egg in general. Given the amount she reads, it's perhaps not surprising that she'd be able to turn her hand to the written word, and to zombie fiction in particular.
It's no secret that I'm a fan of strong female lead characters. Forgive me, then, for being predisposed towards Emma, Time of Death's protagonist and all-round buttock-thwacker.
She is a refreshing lead in a genre where the trope is for women to be weak, mere bit-part players in an alpha male hip-thrusting competition to zombie glory. Don't get me wrong; Emma has her weak moments. This makes her more real to the imagination, and makes her eminently more readable than a battle-hardened post-Middle East war veteran that just happens to be on home soil when the world explodes. Emma cries (a lot) and relies heavily on her husband Jake for mental and physical stability. But where a man is lacking, her pet dog Daphne steps up to the mark (and God help anyone that tries to hurt the dog).
The story in ToD flows well. We're straight in to the action (well, right after a Code Brown, which made me want to bring up a little bit of dinner). Festa's prose is second to none. There is a lot less dialogue in this book than I see in many books of zombie fiction. This is perhaps accurate; who's going to want to gossip when the world ends. She also avoids needless filler; where there needs to be a passage of time, it is there. We don't get a fortnight of laundry and horizon-spotting.
The gore is there - in spades. It's close to the bone, and more than once I had to close my eyes to shake off the pictures being put in to my brain. There is skill in the action crafted in ToD and I didn't want to put this book down. It has a neat balance between civilian and military conflict, and I wasn't overloaded with military jargon, which I feel happens in some similar books. I read it in two swift sittings, though the book perhaps deserves more time and effort - so I got it on Audible, too.
Well worth the buy and read - consider me a fan. Can't wait for the next instalment which, thankfully for me, will be out before Christmas!
I can't wait to see where Emma and her group head to next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good start
I bought this as I follow Shana on twitter and enjoy her reviews so was excited to read her first book. She stands by honest reviews so here is mine.
The positives are that it is the standard Zombies that are around (I much prefer these in books, I prefer the horde mentality), the characters are generally likeable and the writing is exquisite and very tight. Reading this book has given me new vigour to read more as I had had a lull from all formats over the last few weeks and also to work more on my own projects. So thank you Shana for that.
The downsides. It is a short book and some areas could have been fleshed out a bit IMO (trips into town, the island etc), because it is a short book £3.67 is expensive and I suspect mainly due to being signed to a publisher. Normally for a book of this size I wouldn't pay over £1.99 ($3).
I have given 5 stars because if there was an option I would drop it half a star for the cost but as there isn't and the writing and story lines work it deserves more than a 4 star review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Horror
‘Time of Death: Induction’ is the story of student nurse Emma, her husband, and their dog, as they struggle to survive a zombie apocalypse.
I bought this right after reading the author’s brilliant short story in the ‘At Hell’s Gates’ anthology. This book contains a fairly typical set up for a zombie apocalypse story, but it is set apart by the amazingly well written characters and the authenticity the author’s real-life experience as a nurse adds to the book. I was captivated by these characters within the first few pages, not wanting to put the book down until I got to the end. I cared about what happened to them, which really amped up the suspense when they were put in peril.
The journey the characters go on is a satisfying one, with plenty of tense and shocking moments throughout. There is a definite sense of hope buried under the horror and there are moments when this shines through, only to be torn apart again by the realities of life during a zombie apocalypse. This made for a read that was both dark and entertaining.
Overall this is a captivating read that should entertain and satisfy fans of this genre. I think it would also be an excellent introduction to anyone who is new to zombie fiction. Highly recommended - can't wait to read the next book in the series!
